Gene Maddalena
In late 2009, family patriarch Gene Maddalena passed away after a long illness. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the more than 800 people who attended Gene’s funeral.
He is greatly missed by his wife Janet, sons Gene Jr. and Jeff, and their friends. Janet, Gene Jr. and Jeff inherited a legacy of love of family, pride in work, and generosity to others.
Gene graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1976 and had been working in restaurants and Country Clubs since he was 16 years old. A strong, vibrant man, Gene worked long hours with spatula, eggs and cream cheese to bake the cakes that met his level of quality. In the early years after long hours of baking, Janet handled selling while Gene took up hammer and nails to build a structure and personally install the ovens and freezer units that are today’s fully-operational Maddalena bakery.
In the later years, he was proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with his sons as his business expanded into catering, Janet’s skill at elaborate cake decorating achieved recognition, and Gene was able to become more involved in the community he loved.
