Sister of Gene Maddalena, East Amwell man who died of cancer, takes part in LIVESTRONG cancer fundraiser

EAST AMWELL TWP. — On the first anniversary of the death of her brother, Gene Maddalena, Anna Marie Maddalena-Gonzalez and her husband Ed will participate in the LIVESTRONG Challenge in Austin, Texas.
“On the weekend of Oct. 23, we are going to ride our bikes 45 miles in the hills of Austin. Our goal is not just to participate in the challenge, but to honor Gene as well as the millions of others whom this disease affects by raising $5,000 for the fight against cancer,” she said.

Gene, proprietor with his wife, Janet, of Maddalena’s catering and cheesecake business in East Amwell, was first found to have cancer in 2001. “After a long and difficult battle with this terrible disease, Gene lost his fight. He was 53,” Anna Marie said. The family grew up in the Croton section of Raritan Township.

Through the challenge, “we are picking a fight with cancer and uniting with others who are interested in making cancer a global priority,” she said.
